Stewart Brand and Larry Brilliant open The WELL (Whole Earth ‘Lectronic Link) online service, one of the first online communities, to the public with only a brief notice in theWhole Earth Review. Brilliant, a physician and head of Network Technologies Int’l. in Michigan, proposed the idea for a public computer conferencing system to Brand, the publisher of the Whole Earth Catalog. The WELL, which runs on PicoSpan conferencing software, is the result. Not only will the community (which begins as adial-up bulletin board system (BBS)) achieve many historic first, it will have a far-reaching impact on the culture of the internet, which is still in it infancy. By the end of 1987, WELL will have over two thousand users. Read more about The Well in Howard Rheingold’s 1993 book The Virtual Community.

Google launches Gmail, a free webmail and POP3 email service, as an invitation-only beta. The launch is initially met with wide-spread skepticism due to Google’s long-standing tradition of April Fool’s jokes. Gmail differs from other services in that it ran as smoothly as any desktop application, largely thanks to the use of Ajax in its interface. The service offers one gigabyte of storage capacity, an unprecedented capacity for a major email provider, and it will quickly become know for its phenomenally effective spam filters. The service will be opened to the public on February 7, 2007. Within months of going public, Gmail will inspire hundreds of major sites to implement Ajax into their own, establishing Ajax as the defacto standard for interactive websites. Visit the official GMail website.
Google doubles the storage space available to the users of its email service, Gmail, to two gigabytes to commemorate the anniversary of the service’s launch.

Google files with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, stating that the 5.3 million shares of Class A common stock that will be sold during its initial public offering (IPO) will be priced at US$389.75 per share. The estimated net proceeds of the IPO will be approximately US$2.065 billion. In the same filing, the company’s co-founders, Sergey Brin and Larry Page, and its chief executive, Eric Schmidt, state that they will continue to maintain their one dollar annual salaries in 2006 and forgo all bonuses.

The European Union Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement Directive (IPRED) goes into effect in Sweden. The law allows copyright holders to force internet service providers to reveal the names of users whose IP addresses are identified as having been involved in sharing copyrighted material, such as movies and music, without permission. The same day that the law goes into effect, internet traffic drops by an average of 80 to 120Gbps or roughly 33% nationwide, presumably due to a sudden cessation of filesharing among a very large section of Swedish citizens. Prior to the passage of the directive, it was estimated that roughly eight percent of the nation’s population and approximately two million computers were involved in filesharing in Sweden. The Swedish parliament voted to implement the Directive on February 26, 2009. Read more at the BBC.
