In the early twentieth century, the public called on legislators to tame the tide of business leaders who used their wealth and influence to corrupt politicians. On this day in 1907, Congress heeded this call and passed a reform bill that barred America's corporations from making contributions to national campaigns.

1月26日证监会主席周正庆在全国证券、 期货工作会议上提出今年证券市场发展方略:在上海、 深圳证券交易所设立高新技术板,单独编制股票指数,单独集中显示行情, 试行上网发行与向二级市场投资者配售相结合的股票发行方式,继续探索和完善保险资金进入证券市场的有效途径,促进上市公司购并重组, 重组后符合条件的上市公司,将允许其进行增发新股试点,着手研究连续三年以上亏损上市公司的退出机制,实行改制辅导一年、 证券公司推荐、发行审核委员会审核、通过市场机制确定发行价格,证监会核准的股票发行核准制度。

Western Union discontinues its telegram service. This ended the era of telegrams which began in 1851 with the founding of the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company, and which spanned 155 years of continuous service. Western Union reported that telegrams sent had fallen to a total of 20,000 a year, due to competition from other communication services such as email.
