1969
The first permanent ARPANET link is established, after a bit of tweaking, betweenUCLA and the SRI machine at Stanford over a 50Kbps connection. An earlier attempt had failed when the SRI system crashed after typing the “L” and “O” of the login command. Most industry historians will later consider this date to be the birth of the internet.

The website of Springfield College is hacked by “Mr 9X (GM 288)”.
2003
Gottfrid Svartholm, Fredrik Neij, and Peter Sunde launch The Pirate Bay bittorrentindex in Sweden. By 2008, the site will be one of the one hundred most popular websites in the world, according to Alexa. The Pirate Bay’s first server will eventually be placed on display in a Stockholm museum.

The value of Google stock exceeds five hundred dollars for the first time, peaking at US$507.52.
